Sotheby’s launches a new digital art auction featuring prominent NFTs like CryptoPunks and Beeple’s “Mother of Evolution.”

British auction house Sotheby’s has announced the launch of its latest digital art sale, featuring popular non-fungible tokens (NFTs) including CryptoPunks and other well-known digital artworks.

Among the highlights of the sale are two CryptoPunks, #491 and #244, both with a starting bid price of $60,000. Beeple’s “Mother of Evolution,” another featured artwork, begins at $70,000.

Other notable pieces up for bid include Tyler Hobbs’ “Fidenza” #695 and #859, Dmitri Cherniak’s “Incomplete Control #92,” and FEWOCiOUS’ “The Innovator’s Dinner.”

The auction, which started today, will continue until August 22, 2024. Buyers have the option to pay in either cryptocurrencies or US dollars.

This auction follows a series of successful NFT sales by Sotheby’s over the past two years.

Earlier this year, in June, Sotheby’s held an auction of NFTs from the bankrupt Three Arrows Capital (3AC) collection, raising nearly $1 million. The auction included top-selling NFTs from popular collections like Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Pudgy Penguins, marking it as Sotheby’s second-highest NFT auction to date.

In March, Sotheby’s introduced “R(Evolutionaries),” an NFT auction curated by the MORROW collective. This sale celebrated a decade of blockchain art, featuring pioneering artists and key moments in the evolution of the NFT space.

In January, Sotheby’s concluded its “Natively Digital” Bitcoin NFT sale, featuring various artworks and bringing in over $1 million.

These events have bolstered Sotheby’s reputation in the digital art market. In 2023, the auction house reported $35 million in digital art sales, with NFTs playing a significant role in that success.
